The Story

Martine - The Girl in the Shadows is about Martine’s childhood in South Africa, using her memories and her childhood friends’ recollections to describe with great detail and sensitivity what happened to her. Martine’s childhood shows  stoical self-sufficiency, as well as heartbreak in the face of a multitude of abusive and neglectful situations.  School and neighbours’ homes were her only sanctuary.   Nobody told Martine when her birthday was and nobody thought to celebrate it with her.  Martine’s intelligence, independence and determination to get through life allowed her to find comfort and eventually love, meeting Kenneth at 13 and marrying at 17.

I would highly recommend reading this book, it is a compelling read.

It shows strength, determination, and independence while experiencing repetitive neglect and abuse.

Although sad in many parts, you see Martines’ resilience and strength grow as she matures into a teenager.

I have re-read the preface since starting the book and found it very apt and suitable.

This was a book I started to read and very quickly found it difficult to put down. For anyone who has experienced a turbulent and difficult childhood this a must to read. Martine’s story is hard to read but at the end of it with a determination to succeed you can come out with success and happiness.
